The previous reviewer gave a good summary of this book, which was strongly recommended to me by an English family member who works in both the Netherlands and Germany. It tells a highly believable, but presumably fictional based on true experiences, account of the pre, war and post war experiences of the two twins reared apart in these two countries. It depicts very well the perceptions, values and interpretations of events which represent the cultural attitudes of these two nations. For me it was a long but compelling read which helped me understand attitudes to WW2 from two intimately involved countries who were in very different situations. Perhaps to know all is to forgive all. I should say that some others who I have recommended it to found it too lengthy, to me WW2 still provides the major moral questions for my generation even though I was born after it.Tags : The Twins [Tessa De Loo, Ruth Levitt] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I thought it was a great book
I like stories who have based in history. This is really thrilly and sincere story the same time.
I really detested reading this book. Only on the very last page did I see a tiny little glimpse of what might have been (when the surviving sister finally admits that she could have told Anna that "she understood"), had the author actually built the twin sisters' characters. The story is an endless description of situations and how the twins reacted to them, but there is no depth into why they behave the way they do. I love my books, I like to have them on my shelves and look into them again once in a while. This was my first version purchase, and I am oh so glad I did not waste the money on book + exhorbitant international postage cost. One for the "delete" function.
This was a refreshing read, something really different. As a retired translator the only slight disappointment was what I felt as a slight deterioration in the translation as the book went on. No matter, viewpoints from other cultures are always interesting, especially from countries where one has lived - the Netherlands many years ago
"Science" is very very flaky, but plot is addictive, as fantasy only.
A very gripping story that flowed well and kept you guessing if they would reconcile at all.
Interesting to read about the two "opposite" experiences.
Anyone interested in a good historical novel.
Just finished reading. Wow. What are the words I can use to describe your book...powerful...moving. Thank you for such a good book to enjoy. My husband and I have traveled to Germany and the Netherlands many times and if anyone else travels there you will understand that these places have such a huge history everywhere of WWII. I always wonder what all the stories of these peoples families were during the war. This book gives you that insight. You see, feel, hear and smell it all throughout the book. Thanks for those experiences!
