Sam Bass is tall and lanky, loves old western movies, wears cowboy boots, and drives a beat-up Jeep Wrangler. He's a hot-shot pilot running a shoestring charter business on remote Ocracoke Island, and he has a gorgeous girlfriend, Valerie, a Cherokee widow with a young son.
When Sam risks everything to help rescue a couple lost at sea in a storm, he gets publicity he definitely doesn't need.
The Cowboy, as he's known to certain dangerous people, has been located and a hit team is dispatched to take care of unfinished business. Sam, Valerie, and her son are suddenly the focus of evil. Their world erupts with violence. and the only response is a trail of vengeance as ancient as the ghosts of the smoky Mountain Cherokees.
The debut novel in the John Hardin suspense series.

First, the book is entertaining. If you want an action book with a plot that is grammatically correct, has good character development, and will keep you awake past your normal bedtime, then this one will meet all those criterion. Phil Bowie's premier book in the John Hardin series introduces the character that will become John Hardin and the events that shape the outlook of "The Cowboy".Technically it is quite flawed and biased. The comments on "light weaponry" (rifles) and their dangers worldwide are biased and exaggerated. Other technical problems abound. The one I'll remember forever was a description of the bayonet used on the "bolt action M1 Garand". Come on!!! The M1 Garand is the rifle that gave our troops the edge in WWII. General George Patton said of it, "In my opinion, the M-1 Rifle is the greatest battle implement ever devised." It's a semi-automatic with an 8-round en bloc clip. Obviously the author doesn't know many people who know anything at all about guns, or this would have been caught early in the proofreading process.
Small errors about firearms would have been more forgivable if the title of the book itself was something besides, "Guns". If it's the title of the book, then it had better be accurate. At least there weren't any silenced revolvers.
This book would have been a 4 or 5 except for all the errors and horribly biased political opinions. That pulled it down to a 3. Entertainment kept the rating as high as it is.

GUNS John Hardin Book 1 edition by Phil Bowie Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book was not at all what I expected based on the title and description. The revenge plot did not lead to many surprises with one big exception. The hero's background was not at all what I expected. [SPOILER] Instead of being someone skilled in the world of firearms and tactical operations or some similar background, he was simply a commercial pilot. I suppose this unexpected revelation should have enhanced the story as an everyman succeeds in obtaining his revenge but I felt it detracted from the story.
All in all, the book left me wanting more and not in the good way. With that said, I will try the next story in the series.
I enjoyed this book and story line. This book had characters that were interesting and it was a good revenge book. Thanks John
Good quick easy read. It doesn't move particularly fast and it slows to a snail's pace in a few places. Filled with long explanations and lots of factoids. You learn about planes/guns with a few Native American stories thrown in. Is Sam- Jack Reacher..no way. Is he intersting..quite-he is your champion by the end of it. It was quite predictable with the exception of one unforseen(at least by me) twist. I still enjoyed the read and would probably read another one if it comes up as a free offer. Will I buy the next one..I doubt it.
I got about a fourth of the way into the story when I gave up. It had a great start but then turned into way too many pages of long drawn out deep thinking and mind-numbing explanations about boring people. The bad guys seemed pretty stereotypical and the hero was a Clint Eastwood wanna be - tall, lean, quiet talking, cowboy, etc. It seemed to be turning into a typical revenge type story and I didn't feel like following it.
I don't normally comment on free e-books, but I do make exceptions when they are really really good! In this case, Phil Bowie hooked me in the mouth and pulled me in! His start, building out the characters, got me wondering what was up? What the heck is this building to. Well, once Sam Bass (John Hardin, Cowboy) got active, I could not put the book down!! Good descriptions of the country, coast, mountains, guns, and aircraft added greatly to the mind's eye. Can't wait for the next book!!
This book is an interconnected series of short stories, all related to the plop, but we get the back-story about midway through the book. Unfortunately, I'd set it aside (lost track of it actually) when I was about 20% into it and didn't realize right away that that was what I was reading when I started reading it again. At the end, there was a couple who gave him a lot of money, and I had no idea who they were (they were introduced at the beginning of the story). Oh, now I remember.
Anyways, it's a fairly good story, but can be a bit confusing if you don't stay focused. Oh, wait. I think I just did a review of me.
I loved this book. You might not. It was fascinating to me because it has a lot of accurate flying of airplanes in it, and I have been messing around airplanes for more than fifty years. The plot was well thought out, and the writing was well done. I must admit, as some reviewers have pointed out, sometimes it gets "preachy" with characters making speeches to each other. Especially on the subject of "gun control" where the protagonist seems to become ambivalent - is he for it, or against it? We never really find out. But that is irrelevant to the story. I was drawn in by the characters and found it to be, for me, a page turner. Oh, I almost forgot - I actually know a guy who is named "Sam Bass" and he is a retired Delta Airlines Captain. Wonder if.....nah, couldn't be. If you don't like guns, airplanes, or guys who have balls you may not like this one. I did.
