The book had an exhilarating start setting up the unique meeting of the housemaid Anne with the Marquess Ruel when he arrived with the local beggars at the kitchen step. But as their relationship "developed" and gets meshed into a whirlwind plot, I started to get frustrated with Anne.Being a strong Christian, and admitting that she acted rashly by marrying Ruel & for the wrong reason, there was no need for her to constantly bash Ruel by pointing out all his faults constantly. And she certainly didn't behave like a good wife on the pretense that the marriage was a sham & on the presumption that Ruel will eventually dissolve the marriage once she lost her usefulness. But the fact remains that they were married before God and witnesses, & regardless of the scheming & the future what-ifs, she needed to act the part of the wife. And she kept agonizing over the "sham" aspect of the marriage, & lamenting her failures as though she was married to an abusive cad, when Ruel was perfectly cordial and pleasant, treating her with the utmost care. He was also attracted to her, and wanted to consumate the marriage which she refused, which is also a duty of a good wife. She acted as though he had the gall of requesting such a thing, as though he was being amoral, even though she desired him too & she WAS his wife. This banter went on and on and on to the point of nauseum.
Towards the end, when after an unexpected separation, and they were reunited, and both admitting their love for one another, the story became enduring again, but by then, I'd lost much of my enthusiasm.
I still consider it a good book, which gives great insight into lace making, the war with France, & the devision between classes.

The Bachelor Bargain Miss Pickworth Series #2 Catherine Palmer 9780842319294 Books Reviews
I'm still reading Bachelors Bargain an I'm enjoying it very much.
I tried to find this book in several areas, but it was always sold out. I was very happy to find it here.
Real lace making is very interesting. My sister recently took up the art, so this book was of great interest to me. I would recommend it simply for the lacing history.
Brand new as stated and received very quickly. Great book! The first book of the series is The Affectionate Adversary.
Great series, this is book 2. Simple story but keeps you interested.
I really enjoyed this story and I am surprised by other's comments and reviews. I wasn't planning on writing this review, but in light of other's comments, I wanted to share what I like about the book.
I read this book the first time a couple of years ago and only once or twice since then, yet I only had to read the blurb for the story to come back to mind with a smile on my face. I love the interaction between the characters and I found the plot enjoyable. I think it's very hard these days to write anything, especially romance, that doesn't have a similar basic premise to other stories. In fact, I have a writing book that actually categorises plot lines for romance. It's very difficult to think of a story that doesn't fall under one of the categories.
This is the 2nd book in the Miss Pickworth series. I enjoyed both books, but the first book bogged down some in the middle. This 2nd book was more fun to read. Both books make the reader aware of the class levels in England that could destroy families and make life unbearable for the poor and lower classes. I have loved Jane Austin`s works, and these books are reminiscent of them.
