All it takes is a wish upon a star, and Jillian finds herself in a Regency world she only read about in romance novels. She wakes in an exciting world of adventure and challenges but didn’t expect the new life she received. A maid? OMG!
An ambitious girl, she schemes to rise above her station and become a lady with a title and wealth. She’ll go to any lengths to achieve her goals—even risking the anger of her captors, the hazy eyes always gazing down upon the ancient world. Will her attempts to climb the social ladder get her into trouble?

The strange new world Kendika found herself in after the deaths of her parents has claimed another victim. A simple wish for adventure lands Jillian in what she thinks is the perfect place to live out her fantasies. However, when she realizes her role is to play the part of a servant, her wish suddenly doesn't seem so appealing.

I was surprised at first to realize this did not open with Kendika, but I was interested to see who this new girl was and how she would both impact the faux Regency world, and how it would affect her.

I didn't immediately take to Jillian. I thought she was rather self centered and lacked the warmth Kendika had. As I continued to read, I realized the reasoning behind why Bazzi wrote Jillian this way. Her attitude created conflict with Kendika (who is still a part of this book). The two young ladies are quite different from each other, and their understanding of the world is miles apart. Kendika became even more likable to me as she attempted to help Jillian. I was pleased with the subtle changes her character had undergone from the first book.

What I had a bit of trouble with was the balance between how much face time each girl got. Jillian was selfish and a bit annoying, which she was meant to be. She was a great contrast to Kendika. The issue for me was that Jillian took up most of the book, so readers spend the most time with a character they don't really like. I think if the time had been split between Jillian and Kendika more evenly this wouldn't have been an issue.

My only other issue was that I didn't feel like this section of the overall story wrapped up as completely as the first section. At the end of book one I felt Kendika had learned a lesson and had been changed by her experience. In this book, Jillian is punished, but I never felt she really learned her lesson or changed at the end. This may just be that her story will continue to grow and develop in the next few installments, so I am prepared to wait and see.

Overall, this was a fun read. I am enjoying the serial style of this story and I think young readers will like the emotional drama in each page that teens can easily identify with, as well as the desire to wish away problems in hopes of something better being around the corner. The story itself was well written and will click with young readers easily.

The New Girl in Town White Swans Book 2 eBook annamaria bazzi Reviews

Things aren't supposed to work this way down the rabbit hole. Having read the first installment, White Swans - A Regency Era, seeing what is happening next in this Mad Hatter world of hers was only to be expected. Enter Jillian, the new girl in town and things begin to become topsy-turvy. No spoiler intended, but let's just say "no good deed shall go unpunished"
After reading book one of the White Swan's Series, I was anxiously waiting to find out what would happen to Kendika next. I had to wait a bit at first though, because in book number two, we meet Jillian, the new girl in town. While Kendika tries to make the huge adjustment from their former world to this strange new one easier for her, Jillian has her own ideas of what would make her new life better and more adventurous.

Along with meeting new characters and catching up with old ones, book number two begins to shed more light on the mystery of the watching eyes and why they do the things they do. Some pretty big surprises are also revealed and we start to get an inkling of what is yet to come.

Of course book two ends in a cliffhanger much like the first one did, so I'm back to anxiously waiting now as I anticipate the release of book number three...
My Review I was really glad to get the chance to review this book since I have been wanting to know how Kendrika managed with the web feet she got at the end of the last book. This book fills us in on a little more of the place these people find themselves living in. As well we find out more about the mysterious eyes in the sky. A new character is introduced to the mix. Jillian who we find out was seriously ill in the real world is brought in a servant. She has better ideas though and sees no reason why should stay in her place when she can better herself by becoming the duchess. Not heeding the warnings of her companions she finds herself in hot water with the powers that rule this world. Ms. Bazzi leaves us wanting more and waiting to see what becomes of this ambitious girl and whether there is a way back. This would make an excellent series for the young readers out there. I Give the book 5 stars.
